“Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today”
I am a UK-based conservation scientist, filmmaker and director of the Edinburgh Conservation Film Festival. I am passionate about communicating biodiversity conservation. I tell the stories of people and organisations making a huge impact on preserving the world’s wildlife and wild places; the science that underpins how, why, and where conservation happens; and communicating what people at home can do to help protect the planet we live on. While I hold a doctorate in Ecology and Evolution and have 20 years of experience working in applied conservation and conservation science, I have found that engaging the public with stories and images of conservation success is a far more effective and inspiring way of communicating conservation than through figures and graphs.
While I am still actively involved in applied conservation, in particular wildlife forensics and wildlife crime scene investigation, much of my time is dedicated towards developing ways of telling the stories behind conservation. Conservation is not just about natural history, beautiful places and magnificent animals, it is about the people, their dedication and the years of hard work they put into protecting and restoring the world’s biodiversity.
I want to tell those stories
Having spent many years working in the field as a conservation biologist, I am more than aware of the difficulties of hosting the media, especially when a multi-person film crew descends on your field site. To avoid this type of intrusion I work with a small or single-person crew carrying only the essential kit needed to tell the story while being as unobtrusive as possible. If you need an extra pair of hands in a crisis, I will happily put the camera down and get my hands dirty.
If you are interested in having your work and your story told, please do get in touch.
